A crate isn't a punishment — it's your puppy's safe haven. When introduced the right way, most dogs actually love their crate. It becomes their den, their quiet place, their spot to decompress.
Start Small
Begin with the crate door open and toss a few treats inside. Let your puppy go in and out freely. No pressure, no closing the door yet. You want them to associate the crate with good things.
Build Duration Slowly
Once your puppy is comfortable going in, start closing the door for just a few seconds. Gradually increase the time. Stay nearby at first so they know you haven't disappeared.
Feed meals inside the crate. This creates a strong positive association and makes the crate feel like a rewarding place to be.
Nighttime Crating
Place the crate in your bedroom at first. Puppies are social and being near you helps them settle faster. As they get more comfortable, you can gradually move the crate to its permanent spot.
The Golden Rule
Never use the crate as punishment. If your puppy has a bad experience in the crate, it sets training back significantly. Keep it positive, keep it short, and celebrate the wins. 🐾
